Library Information for Distance Learners: Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Information

Interlibrary Loan FAQs

What is Interlibrary Loan (or ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan is the process by which materials not owned by the DiPietro Library are requested from another library.

Who can request materials via ILL?

Any current undergraduate or graduate student, FPU faculty, and FPU staff. Local patrons should request ILL materials from their public library.

Do I need to know what library has the material I need?

No.  We are a member of OCLC, a world-wide network that allows us to search for materials that have been requested.

How long does it take for ILL's to arrive?

It depends on the material (book or article) and the library filling the request.  The DiPietro Library sends out most requests the day they are received.  Articles that are sent electronically may arrive as quickly as 24 hours, but you should plan on 3-5 days. Books that come from a distance may take 7-10 days.

What if I need something faster than that?

We are not able to ‘rush’ items.  When planning your research process, allow the necessary time for any interlibrary loans to arrive.

What can I borrow?

We will borrow books, articles, and dissertations.  We do not borrow videos, dvds, or video games. Undergraduates wishing to borrow a dissertation will be referred to a Reference Librarian for research assistance.

If I am in a graduate program how do I get my items?

Articles are yours to keep and are usually forwarded to you electronically, unless you requested that they be printed or if the article is lengthy and received in printed format. Materials that must be returned to the lending library will be sent to your campus and may be returned there. Materials requested by 100% online students will be sent to their home address, they will be responsible for any charges associated with returning the materials.

Does it cost anything to get an ILL?

Generally we can fill your request for free.  If there is a cost for borrowing the item or obtaining a copy we will contact you for your approval.

How can I request ILL materials?

Materials should be requested online via RavenRequest (http://libguides.franklinpierce.edu/ravenrequest).  You will need to create an account the first time you use RavenRequest.  RavenRequest offers additional benefits like being able to check the status of your request, seeing a list of materials you've requested, and submitting renewal requests.

What is a barcode and how do I get one?

If you have a Franklin Pierce ID, your barcode is your Card# located on the front of your ID.

Requesting an ILL from a database

Some of our databases have embedded Interlibrary loan forms, allowing you to request items from within the database.  Here is an example from CINAHL.
