A Student's Guide to Artificial Intelligence: Introduction

This guide provides a resource for students on the presence and use of AI in higher education.

What is AI?

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that develops systems able to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. These tasks include recognizing images and speech, understanding language, analyzing information, solving problems, and making predictions or decisions. AI systems work by processing large amounts of data and finding patterns, which allows them to improve their performance over time.

What is Generative AI?

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) is a type of AI that creates new content—such as text, images, music, or code—based on patterns it has learned from existing data. Instead of just analyzing or classifying information, generative AI produces original material that can look or sound like it was made by humans. These systems work by predicting what should come next, such as the next word in a sentence or the next pixel in an image, allowing them to generate realistic and creative outputs
