A Student's Guide to Artificial Intelligence: Using AI Ethically

This guide provides a resource for students on the presence and use of AI in higher education.

Using AI Ethically

Using AI Ethically and Responsibly

As with any other tool, it is your responsibility to use AI ethically and responsibly. This means understanding both its potential and its limits. AI can support your learning—helping you brainstorm ideas, check your writing, or review material—but it cannot replace your own thinking and effort.

When you use AI, you are expected to follow the same academic standards that apply to all your work. That includes giving proper credit when you’ve relied on an AI tool, making sure the information you submit is accurate and your own, and never misrepresenting AI-generated text or images as entirely your own original work.

Remember, these tools are not perfect—they may present biased or fabricated information, and they cannot know the exact expectations of your professors. You are always responsible for double-checking facts, citing sources correctly, and ensuring your assignments reflect your own learning.

  • Read your syllabus!  What use(s) does (or doesn't) your professor allow?
    • Not sure?  Talk to your professor!
  • Know the academic integrity rules
  • Outputs should always be checked for accuracy and bias
  • Do not claim AI created work as your own
