Things to Note About MLA

  • Authors' names are expressed as their Last Name, First Name, Middle Initial (if it's included). Example: Jenkins, Paul O. 
  • Each word in a title is capitalized, except for minor articles (e.g., the, and, or, unless they are the first word in the title). 
  • Book and journal titles are italicized.
  • Magazine and journal articles and chapters within books appear in quotations. For more guidance on whether an item should be italicized or appear in quotations, refer to pp. 25-28 of The MLA Handbook).
  • Abbreviations like vol., no. and pp. are used to indicate the volume, issue and page numbers.

MLA stands for "Modern Language Association," and is the citation style that is often used in language and literature courses. If you're unsure what style your assignment requires, refer to the assignment sheet, or ask your professor.
