How can I submit an Interlibrary Loan?

There are three main ways you can submit an Interlibrary Loan Request:

Requesting an ILL from a database

Arrow pointing to "Request via Interlibrary Loan"

Some of our databases have embedded Interlibrary loan forms, allowing you to request items from within the database.  Here is an example from CINAHL.

Interlibrary Loan FAQs

What is Interlibrary Loan (or ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan is the process by which materials not owned by the DiPietro Library are requested from another library.

Who can request materials via ILL?

Any current undergraduate or graduate student, FPU faculty, and FPU staff. Local patrons should request ILL materials from their public library.

Do I need to know what library has the material I need?

No.  We are a member of OCLC, a world-wide network that allows us to search for materials that have been requested.

How long does it take for ILL's to arrive?

It depends on the material (book or article) and the library filling the request.  The DiPietro Library sends out most requests the day they are received.  Articles that are sent electronically may arrive as quickly as 24 hours, but you should plan on 3-5 days. Books that come from a distance may take 7-10 days.

What if I need something faster than that?

We are not able to ‘rush’ items.  When planning your research process, allow the necessary time for any interlibrary loans to arrive.

What can I borrow?

We will borrow books, articles, and dissertations.  We do not borrow videos, dvds, or video games. Undergraduates wishing to borrow a dissertation will be referred to a Reference Librarian for research assistance.

We do not fill requests for textbooks.  Please read the following for further information.

If I am in a graduate program how do I get my items?

Articles are yours to keep are forwarded to you electronically.  Books borrowed from another library will be sent to your home address from the campus bookstore via UPS.  A prepaid UPS label will be included for you to return the item to the DiPietro Library which will then return it to the lending library.  If you use a different return method then you are responsible for the return postage and for using a service that  will insure and track the package, for example U.S.P.S or FedEx.

Does it cost anything to get an ILL?

Generally we can fill your request for free.  If there is a cost for borrowing the item or obtaining a copy the library will absorb the cost but we may contact to determine that you really need the item before submitting the request.
