The CIBA-GEIGY Corporation Exceptional Black Scientists Collection is divided into two series: Infromation on Scientists and Distribution of Posters and video. There is biographical information on each of the fifteen scientists honored by CIBA-GEIGY as well as scientists who were considered but not selected for the poster award, including William T. Wright, surgeon and civil rights leader. Material about Ernest Crichlow, the portrait artist, is also included. Correspondence with individuals and organizations requesting copies of the posters and videotape produced by CIBA-GEIGY, shipping orders and a statistical analysis of those making requests comprise the remainder of the collection.

The mission of the Yale League of Black Scientists is to empower and inspire society at large, the socio-economically disadvantaged, and our members in the pursuit of scientific knowledge and advanced science degrees through realization of previously unforeseen potential. Furthermore, we place a special emphasis on working to increase the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM.

HSBSE is dedicated to the development and growth of black students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) at every stage of their paths.

Here at Science Matters, we hesitate to confine black history to a month. In fact, we strive to bring stories of scientists of all racial and cultural groups to the forefront as we pursue learning in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines. However, we would like to take the opportunity this February to acknowledge and highlight achievements by black Americans, as society often did not value their genius.

Black Scientists Matter is a multimedia platform, a brand, and a registered non profit organization. The organization began as an apparel brand that utilized the power of social media to promote scientific literacy and STEM education to people of of all backgrounds. Currently, the brand maintains multiple social media platforms with a growing follower base and has sold merchandise to 25 different states in the U.S. Black Scientists Matter has also been featured in numerous blogs, podcasts, and publications, and in 2018 was awarded a grant from Johns Hopkins University to further it’s mission of empowering the African American community through science!

Since Benjamin Banneker and George Washington Carver left their marks on American science, African Americans have made great strides as scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and inventors. It’s a story of success in the face of great odds in a racist society. However, there’s still much room for progress, because even today blacks are sorely underrepresented as science students, teachers, and professionals. Here you can hear the voices of just a few of the black scientists who are living and working in North America today—and helping to pave the way for those who will follow.

Black History Month provides teachers with an opportunity to feature the stories and voices of black scientists, engineers and mathematicians in the context of their science instruction. We have made a list of some of the top Black scientists, engineers, inventors and mathematicians, along with media resources to help you bring their work—and stories—into your classroom.

From well-known black scientists, such as George Washington Carver, to James West, who coinvented the microphone, to those whose impressive scientific records have nearly languished in obscurity, our list will have you rethinking what else might be left out of your history textbook.

This list of African Americans inventors and scientists documents many of the African-Americans who have invented a multitude of items or made discoveries in the course of their lives. These have ranged from practical everyday devices to applications and scientific discoveries in diverse fields, including physics, biology, math, plus the medical, nuclear and space science.

Black scientists, engineers, and inventors have made important contributions to society. These profiles of famous people will help you learn about black scientists, engineers, inventors and their projects.

Now, NIH scientists have identified a key factor they hadn't previously considered: the topics that black scientists want to study. Specifically, black applicants are more likely to propose approaches, such as community interventions, and topics, such as health disparities, adolescent health, and fertility, that receive less competitive scores from reviewers.

In elevating black inventors during Black History Month, it’s all too easy to reduce these complex figures to the simplest of forms — that of their contributions. We tend to forget that they were human, driven by their own individual motivations and desires. And in doing so, we miss out on a golden opportunity to understand context — of their lives and of the times in which they lived — and to broaden the power and appeal of their stories.

Black scientists such as George Washington Carver, Mae C. Jemison and Neil deGrasse Tyson are widely known, while others — such as engineer Otis Boykin — are less famous. Discover the struggles and triumphs of these and other African American innovators.

Sometimes the greatest minds are forged amid oppression and injustice. To celebrate Black History Month and honor those who rose in spite of systemic racism, here are 15 African-American inventors and scientists who changed the world.

Black applicants to a prestigious research grant program at the National Institutes of Health are awarded funding at a significantly lower rate than their white peers. The NIH has been intensively investigating this funding gap since a 2011 report revealed the extent of the problem, looking for underlying mechanisms to use as opportunities for corrective intervention.
