Temple Grandin was born Mary Temple Grandin in Boston Massachusetts on August 29, 1947 to a well-to-do family. She was labeled as having “brain damage” due to her different mental development and special needs. Her mother worked very hard to create a safe and encouraging space for her daughter, working with teachers and special needs experts. Grandin’s mother concluded that her daughter was autistic, though Grandin was not formally diagnosed until well into adulthood.

Dr. Temple Grandin is well known to many for her trailblazing work as a spokesperson for people with autism and is one of the first individuals to document the insights she gained from her personal experience of autism.  Dr. Temple Grandin is also well known for her lifelong work with animal behavior.

Emergence is the first-hand account of an autistic woman who beat the odds and cured herself. As a child, Temple Grandin was forced to leave her "normal" school and enroll in a school for autistic children. This account captures the isolation and fears suffered by autistics and their families and the quiet strength of one woman who insisted on a miracle.
