In July 2011, the University approached the Rindge Planning Board about plans for a new health science and athletic training facility. A donation from Arthur and Martha Pappas for $1.1 million was the largest in University history, and the total cost for the addition was estimated at about $2 million (Pierce Arrow 08/27/2011).
In October 2011, ground was broken for the new Health Science and Athletic Training Center. This building is attached to the field house. It is a two-story, 9000 square foot, $2 million facility. It provides academic space to expand the Health Sciences program, as well as additional athletic training facilities. The training facilities on the first floor are 4,500 square feet and include multiple taping stations, training tables and a hydrotherapy area with whirlpools. Three offices will house athletic training staff. The second floor provides 4,500 square feet of flexible academic space.
A September 2012 ribbon-cutting ceremony was held during alumni weekend. Visitors could view the workout equipment and medical stations on the first floor. Offices for coaches and instructors are also on the first floor, along with access to the Fieldhouse. The top floor holds more office space and two new classrooms (Pierce Arrow 10/18/2012).
